Scholarships for descendants of veterans - worth up to $24,000

Did a parent, grandparent, or great-grandparent serve in the Australian military? Students descended from anyone who served - WWI to today, including peacekeeping - can apply for scholarships worth $4,000 to $8,000 per year for uni or TAFE. That includes the AVCAT scholarships (applications close 31 October) and the Gallipoli Scholarship ($8,000 per year, applications open in January).

Grandchildren and great-grandchildren are eligible, and women's wartime service (nurses, AWAS, WAAAF, WRANS) counts the same as any other. These programs receive far fewer applications than mainstream scholarships - some go unawarded.

  • The eligibility is invisible to schools. It runs through grandparents and great-grandparents - 1.1 million Australians served, so a meaningful slice of any cohort qualifies without knowing it. The newsletter reaches the kitchen table, where someone remembers.
  • These reach students your equity programs miss. Descendant scholarships assess the student's circumstances - financial, medical, family or relocation hardship all count. For regional students facing relocation costs, $4,000-$8,000 a year is often the difference between enrolling and not.

Term 3: August - October

Open Now

The big window. AVCAT opens 18 August (Vietnam Veterans' Day) and closes 31 October - Long Tan Bursaries plus RSL, Legacy and state programs. Run the block early in the term, again mid-September.

Term 4: November - December

Prep Window

Year 12s finishing up, families asking "do we qualify for anything?" The smart move now: find the service record and get it decoded, ready for January.

Gallipoli Scholarship

$8,000 a year, first-year uni or TAFE, opens and closes inside two months. School leavers who saw your Term 4 mention are the ones who make this deadline.

  • The database is free and stays free. No login, no paywall, no student data collected. Every listing links directly to the scholarship provider.
  • There is a paid service, and it's optional. Decode My Digger translates a service record from army shorthand into plain English for $59 - a family decision, made at home. Nothing on this site requires it.
  • We're independent. Not affiliated with AVCAT, the Gallipoli Scholarship Fund, Legacy or the RSL - we point families to them and help the application say more than "my great-grandfather served".
