HECS indexes. Rent doesn't stop. A scholarship is the one number in the whole spreadsheet that works for you - and these ones are means-tested on your child's circumstances, not won by perfect marks.
For first-year uni or TAFE students descended from anyone who served, WWI to present. Under 25, means tested.
$4,000-$6,000 a year for up to three years, for children and grandchildren of veterans. DVA-funded and sponsored programs.
Scholarship money doesn't index, doesn't accrue, and doesn't follow them into their thirties. It just pays for things.
The Trick
Why Nobody in Your School Newsletter Mentioned This
Because the eligibility doesn't look like your child. It looks like a name on a memorial, two or three generations back.
- Grandchildren and great-grandchildren count. Your child doesn't need a parent who served. A grandparent or great-grandparent - even a great-great-great uncle - can carry the eligibility.
- 1.1 million Australians served across the Boer War, both World Wars, Korea and Vietnam. If your family's been here three generations, the odds someone's in the Archives are genuinely good.
- Almost nobody applies. We went looking for chatter about these scholarships on every parent and finance forum in the country. There's essentially none - which tells you exactly how small the applicant pool is.
- Her service counts too. Nurses, AWAS, WAAAF, WRANS - if your grandmother served, her record carries the same eligibility as any other.

The $59, itemised
The record you download is 20-40 pages of copperplate handwriting and army shorthand. Most families can't read a line of it. The $59 turns it into:
- A plain-English narrative of their whole service - Word document, ready to attach to an application
- An Excel timeline of every posting, promotion and event
- Historical cross-referencing and quality assurance - about 15 minutes, not the $500-$1,500 and 4-8 weeks a professional genealogist charges

Every family says a version of the same thing. He came home, he went to work, and the war stayed in a box under the bed - or in a file in Canberra nobody's ever opened.
That file is still there. His enlistment papers, in his own handwriting. Where he went, what happened to him, what he carried home. The people who could read the army's shorthand are retiring, and the people who heard the stories first-hand are nearly gone.

18 August - 31 October
Open NowAVCAT scholarships - Long Tan Bursaries plus RSL, Legacy and state-sponsored programs. This is the bulk of the money. Get the record decoded before the deadline crush.
1 January - 28 February
Gallipoli Scholarship$8,000 a year for first-year uni or TAFE students. Opens and closes fast - families who sorted the record in spring apply in January without the scramble.
Year-round
Always OpenLegacy support, corporate awards and school-level programs take applications all year. The database shows current status on each.
