Not every scholarship for veteran descendants comes from an RSL branch or a government department. Twelve corporations, professional associations, and community-funded organisations fund scholarships through AVCAT - worth $4,000 to $6,000 a year, for up to three years, to a total of $18,000 - through the same single AVCAT application that covers everything else in the network.
Every application has three components:
- Essential requirements - the demographic gates.
- Circumstances - AVCAT's financial hardship test.
- Your Digger's story - the part most applicants underinvest in, and where applications are won.
This is a competitive process. That's not a reason to hold back, it's the reason to build all three components properly. This guide walks through each one, then the full directory of 12 sponsors and the application itself.
1. Essential requirements
You must meet all three - these are the same base criteria as every AVCAT Sponsored Scholarship, since all 12 corporate sponsors are matched through the same AVCAT application.

Individual sponsors in the directory below add their own detail on top of these three - most commonly a state scope. TNN Hobart, for example, is Tasmania-based. Check each entry for what applies.
2. Circumstances
AVCAT's test is financial hardship, assessed on income and assets. There's no published dollar threshold - AVCAT looks at your family's full financial picture, not a single figure.
If your family receives Youth Allowance, ABSTUDY, Austudy, VCES, or MRCAETS, that's strong evidence of financial need, and it's worth stating plainly in your application.
Don't rule yourself out
This is the point where good applicants talk themselves out of applying, and it's worth pausing on.
An unpublished threshold cuts both ways. AVCAT isn't checking your circumstances against a fixed income line and disqualifying you for being a dollar over it - assessors weigh the whole picture of your income and assets against the real cost of you studying. Families who assume they "probably don't qualify" are often exactly who AVCAT wants to hear from.
The worst outcome of applying? A no. The worst outcome of not applying? A guaranteed no.
Be honest and specific in your financial documentation. The assessors are there to weigh a case, not to catch you out.

3. Digger details and knowledge
This is the purpose behind every Digger scholarship - and the part most applicants underinvest in.
A key purpose of these scholarships is to preserve the memory of the Anzacs in younger generations. The assessors are looking for an applicant who fully understands their ancestor's service, can speak to it, and will be a good ambassador for the sponsor awarding the scholarship.
It's also where the competition is won. Most applications answer the service question with a single line - "my grandfather served". The applicant who can tell the panel where their Digger served, what they lived through and why it still matters hands the assessors a story they can't forget.
For corporate sponsors specifically, a clear record can also sharpen the AVCAT match itself. Downer Defence works closely with the Army. Airbus has RAAF helicopter programs. A record that clearly shows your ancestor's service branch helps AVCAT connect you to the sponsors with the closest fit.

Defence industry sponsors
Several major defence contractors fund scholarships through AVCAT. These companies employ thousands of Australians and work closely with the ADF.
Downer Defence - National scope, three scholarships per year, the most of any single corporate sponsor. A major Australian defence contractor providing sustainment, training, and technology services to the ADF.
Airbus - National scope. A global aerospace and defence company with significant Australian operations, including helicopter programs for the ADF.
Global Defence Solutions (GDS) - National scope.
Canary Technology Solutions - National scope.
Resolute Support - National scope.
Healthcare and professional association sponsors
Dialysis Australia - National scope. New sponsor for 2026, bringing the healthcare sector into the corporate mix. As a new sponsor, the first year may see less competition from applicants who aren't yet aware of the opportunity.
NSW Nurses and Midwives' Association - National scope, despite the NSW name. You don't need to be in NSW or studying nursing to be eligible - standard AVCAT criteria apply.
Mellori - National scope.
Government and institutional sponsors
NSW Trustee & Guardian - National scope, despite the NSW name. A government agency providing trustee, estate administration, and financial management services.
Community-funded and memorial sponsors
These sponsors stand out for their funding models - community-driven organisations and memorial funds rather than large corporations.
3 Elements Coffee - National scope. Funded through a portion of sales - a buy-one-support-one model where every cup sold contributes to the scholarship fund.
Roy Morris Memorial Scholarship - National scope. A named memorial scholarship honouring Roy Morris, carrying the personal dimension every memorial scholarship does: an individual's contribution to the veteran community continuing through the next generation's education.
State-specific corporate sponsor
TNN Hobart - Tasmania scope, for children and grandchildren of ex-serving veterans who are Tasmania-based. The only state-specific corporate sponsor in the AVCAT network, and it fills a real gap: Tasmania has no state-specific RSL or ESO sponsors in AVCAT. If you're Tasmania-based, you're eligible for TNN Hobart plus all 11 national corporate sponsors plus all 10 national ESO/RSL sponsors - the single AVCAT form covers them all.

New for 2026
Dialysis Australia joined the AVCAT corporate sponsor network in 2026. If you're applying in the 2026 round (18 August to 31 October), this is a new opportunity that previous applicants didn't have access to.
The sponsor network grows over time - new sponsors join, and occasionally sponsors adjust or conclude their funding. Always check avcat.org.au/sponsors for the current list.
How to apply
Dates and method
Applications open 18 August (Vietnam Veterans' Day) and close 31 October (midnight AEDT) each year.
Apply online at avcat.org.au/scholarships. One form covers all 12 corporate sponsors here, plus the 24 RSL and ESO sponsors and the Long Tan Bursaries if applicable. AVCAT does the matching automatically - you don't choose which sponsor to apply to.
Strengthen the match
State your location clearly. If you're in Tasmania, make sure that's evident in your application so AVCAT can consider you for TNN Hobart.
Mention a health-related course if it applies. It isn't a formal requirement for Dialysis Australia or the NSW Nurses and Midwives' Association - both use the standard AVCAT criteria - but the context can still be worth including.

The 12 corporate sponsors sit alongside 24 RSL and ESO sponsors in the AVCAT network - 36+ sponsors accessible through this one application. Combined with the DVA-funded Long Tan Bursaries (also covered by the same form), it's the single most efficient step you can take in the veteran descendant scholarship landscape. It doesn't stop there either: the Gallipoli Scholarship Fund runs a separate application (1 January to 28 February) worth $8,000 in first year, Legacy Australia runs its own direct support program, and DVA education schemes provide government-funded support for specific circumstances.
