There's a system in Australia that lets you fill out one form and be automatically considered for dozens of education scholarships at the same time. It isn't widely known. It isn't heavily advertised. It's quietly funded by RSL branches, ex-service organisations, war widows' guilds, defence corporations, and community groups across the country.
That system is AVCAT - the Australian Veterans' Children Assistance Trust. And its Sponsored Scholarships program is the broadest education funding pathway available to descendants of Australian veterans.
One application. Thirty-six-plus sponsors. Up to $18,000 over three years.

How AVCAT Sponsored Scholarships work
AVCAT operates as a central clearinghouse. Individual sponsors - RSL state branches, ex-service organisations, corporations, and community groups - fund scholarships through AVCAT. AVCAT manages the application, assessment, and matching process.
Here's what makes the system powerful:
You submit one application. There's a single form on the AVCAT website. It collects your personal details, proof of veteran service, financial circumstances, and academic information.
AVCAT does the matching. After you submit, AVCAT reviews your application and automatically considers you for every scholarship you're eligible for. If you're NSW-based and studying engineering, you'll be considered for national scholarships, NSW-specific scholarships, and any sponsor that targets engineering students. You don't need to know which sponsors exist or apply to them individually.
The same form covers Long Tan Bursaries. If you're also a descendant of a Vietnam veteran, the single AVCAT form covers both Sponsored Scholarships and Long Tan Bursaries. You don't choose between them. AVCAT assesses both.
This single-form system is the most efficient application in the veteran scholarship landscape. One afternoon of paperwork gives you access to the entire AVCAT network.
Who can apply
Children and grandchildren of ex-serving veterans
The AVCAT Sponsored Scholarships program is open to descendants of all ex-serving veterans, not just Vietnam. Your parent or grandparent must have had:
- Operational service (deployment to a conflict, peacekeeping operation, or designated area), OR
- 3+ years of continuous full-time service in the Australian Defence Force
This is broader than the Long Tan Bursaries (Vietnam only) while being slightly narrower than the Gallipoli Scholarship Fund (any service, any duration). The three-year full-time threshold means that even descendants of veterans who served during peacetime may qualify, provided the service was long enough.
Financial hardship
AVCAT requires evidence of financial hardship on income and assets grounds. This is assessed on a case-by-case basis. The threshold isn't published as a fixed dollar amount - AVCAT considers the full picture of your circumstances.
If you're receiving Youth Allowance, ABSTUDY, Austudy, VCES, or MRCAETS, that's strong evidence of financial need.
Study requirements
You must be enrolled in or commencing tertiary study at a recognised Australian institution. This includes university degrees, TAFE courses, and VET diplomas and advanced diplomas.
There's no age limit.

How to read the directory
Scope indicates where you need to be based. "National" means any state or territory. A state abbreviation means you generally need to be based in or studying in that state.
New sponsor for 2026 means the sponsor joined the AVCAT network in 2026. This is worth knowing - new sponsors can mean less competition in the first year.

Applications open on 18 August (Vietnam Veterans' Day) and close on 31 October (midnight AEDT) each year.

- Proof of relationship - birth certificates or other documents establishing your connection to the veteran.
- Evidence of financial hardship - income and assets information, Centrelink statements, or other financial documentation.
- Academic records - transcript and enrolment confirmation.
- Personal statement - your circumstances, study goals, and how the scholarship would help.

AVCAT notifies applicants between late February and March of the following year.
Value and duration
Each AVCAT Sponsored Scholarship is worth $4,000 to $6,000 per year and can be held for up to three years, giving a total maximum value of $18,000.
The exact amount within the $4,000 to $6,000 range depends on the specific sponsor and the applicant's circumstances. Some sponsors fund fixed amounts (RSL Australia funds $5,000 per year). Others vary.
Stacking with other programs
AVCAT Sponsored Scholarships can generally be received alongside:
- Gallipoli Scholarship Fund - separate program, separate application. Apply to both.
- Legacy Education Support - Legacy has its own direct program as well as an AVCAT-sponsored scholarship.
- DVA education schemes (VCES/MRCAETS) - government entitlements, not scholarships.
- University-specific scholarships - check with your institution.
Always confirm with each provider that stacking is permitted.

If you're eligible for more than one program, apply to all of them. The GSF and AVCAT windows don't overlap - apply to the GSF in January-February and AVCAT in August-October. The applications are assessed independently.
Branch-specific and corps-specific scholarships
Two sponsors in the AVCAT network target descendants of veterans from specific branches or corps:
Ad Astra Foundation - linked to the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF). If your ancestor served in the RAAF, this sponsor may prioritise your application.
Certa Cito Foundation - linked to the Royal Australian Corps of Signals. The name "Certa Cito" (Swift and Sure) is the Corps of Signals motto. If your ancestor served in Signals, this connection is worth highlighting in your application.
A decoded service record will clearly show which branch and corps the veteran served in, which helps AVCAT match you to branch-specific sponsors.
How a decoded service record supports your application
The AVCAT application requires proof that the veteran had operational service or 3+ years of full-time service. Military service records contain this information - service dates, unit assignments, deployments, and postings are all documented.
The challenge is readability. A raw service record from the National Archives is full of abbreviations, military shorthand, unit codes, and date formats that aren't intuitive to civilians. The AVCAT assessors know military records, and a clear, readable summary makes their job easier and your application stronger.
