AVCAT Sponsored Scholarships are a network, not a single scholarship. One application through the Australian Veterans' Children Assistance Trust connects you to 36+ sponsors - RSL branches, ex-service organisations, defence corporations, and community groups - worth $4,000 to $6,000 a year, for up to three years, to a total of $18,000.
Every application has three components:
- Essential requirements - the demographic gates.
- Circumstances - AVCAT's financial hardship test.
- Your Digger's story - the part most applicants underinvest in, and where applications are won.
This is a competitive process. That's not a reason to hold back, it's the reason to build all three components properly. This guide walks through each one, then the application itself.
How AVCAT Sponsored Scholarships work
AVCAT operates as a central clearinghouse. Individual sponsors fund scholarships through AVCAT; AVCAT manages the application, assessment, and matching.
You submit one application. A single form on the AVCAT website collects your personal details, proof of veteran service, financial circumstances, and academic information.
AVCAT does the matching. After you submit, AVCAT automatically considers you for every scholarship you're eligible for - national sponsors, state-specific sponsors, and any sponsor that targets your field of study. You don't need to know which of the 36+ sponsors exist or apply to them individually.
The same form covers Long Tan Bursaries. If you're also a descendant of a Vietnam veteran, the single AVCAT form covers both Sponsored Scholarships and Long Tan Bursaries. You don't choose between them - AVCAT assesses both.
The sponsor sets the amount. Where you land within the $4,000 to $6,000 range depends on the specific sponsor and your circumstances. Some sponsors fund a fixed figure - RSL Australia funds $5,000 a year - while others vary.
1. Essential requirements
You must meet all three.

This is broader than the AVCAT Long Tan Bursaries, which are limited to Vietnam veteran descendants (1962-1975), and slightly narrower than the Gallipoli Scholarship Fund, which accepts service of any duration, any conflict. The three-year full-time threshold means even descendants of veterans who served during peacetime can qualify, provided the service was long enough.
If you're also a descendant of a Vietnam veteran, the same AVCAT form covers both programs automatically - no need to apply twice.
2. Circumstances
AVCAT's test is financial hardship, assessed on income and assets. There's no published dollar threshold - AVCAT looks at your family's full financial picture, not a single figure.
If your family receives Youth Allowance, ABSTUDY, Austudy, VCES, or MRCAETS, that's strong evidence of financial need, and it's worth stating plainly in your application.
Don't rule yourself out
This is the point where good applicants talk themselves out of applying, and it's worth pausing on.
An unpublished threshold cuts both ways. AVCAT isn't checking your circumstances against a fixed income line and disqualifying you for being a dollar over it - assessors weigh the whole picture of your income and assets against the real cost of you studying. Families who assume they "probably don't qualify" are often exactly who AVCAT wants to hear from.
The worst outcome of applying? A no. The worst outcome of not applying? A guaranteed no.
Be honest and specific in your financial documentation. The assessors are there to weigh a case, not to catch you out.

3. Digger details and knowledge
This is the purpose behind every Digger scholarship - and the part most applicants underinvest in.
A key purpose of these scholarships is to preserve the memory of the Anzacs in younger generations. The assessors are looking for an applicant who fully understands their ancestor's service, can speak to it, and will be a good ambassador for the sponsor awarding the scholarship.
It's also where the competition is won. Most applications answer the service question with a single line - "my grandfather served". The applicant who can tell the panel where their Digger served, what they lived through and why it still matters hands the assessors a story they can't forget.
The AVCAT application also has to prove operational service or 3+ years of continuous full-time service - and the record itself is the obstacle. A raw National Archives service file is full of abbreviations, unit codes, and date formats that aren't obvious to a civilian reader. A clear, readable summary makes the assessors' job easier and your application stronger. How to apply
Dates and method
Applications open 18 August (Vietnam Veterans' Day) and close 31 October (midnight AEDT) each year.
Apply online at avcat.org.au/scholarships. One form covers both Sponsored Scholarships and Long Tan Bursaries - AVCAT automatically matches you to every scholarship you're eligible for.
What you'll need
- Proof of veteran service - documents showing operational service or 3+ years of continuous full-time service. A decoded service record from Decode My Digger can make this evidence clear and unambiguous.
- Proof of relationship - birth certificates or other documents establishing your connection to the veteran.
- Evidence of financial hardship - income and assets information, Centrelink statements, or other financial documentation.
- Academic records - transcript and enrolment confirmation.
- Personal statement - your circumstances, study goals, and how the scholarship would help.
Outcomes
AVCAT notifies applicants between late February and March of the following year.
Stacking with other programs
AVCAT Sponsored Scholarships can generally be received alongside:
- Gallipoli Scholarship Fund - separate program, separate application. Apply to both.
- Legacy Education Support - Legacy has its own direct program as well as an AVCAT-sponsored scholarship.
- DVA education schemes (VCES/MRCAETS) - government entitlements, not scholarships.
- University-specific scholarships - check with your institution.
Always confirm with each provider that stacking is permitted.

How to read the directory
Scope indicates where you need to be based. "National" means any state or territory. A state abbreviation means you generally need to be based in or studying in that state.
New sponsor for 2026 means the sponsor joined the AVCAT network in 2026 - worth knowing, since new sponsors can mean less competition in the first year.

Branch-specific and corps-specific scholarships
Two sponsors in the AVCAT network target descendants of veterans from specific branches or corps:
Ad Astra Foundation - linked to the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF). If your ancestor served in the RAAF, this sponsor may prioritise your application.
Certa Cito Foundation - linked to the Royal Australian Corps of Signals. The name "Certa Cito" (Swift and Sure) is the Corps of Signals motto. If your ancestor served in Signals, this connection is worth highlighting.
A decoded service record will clearly show which branch and corps the veteran served in, which helps AVCAT match you to branch-specific sponsors.

If you're eligible for more than one program, apply to all of them. The GSF and AVCAT windows don't overlap - apply to the GSF in January-February and AVCAT in August-October. The applications are assessed independently.
